Dog Grooming Tips for a Cleaner, Happier Pet

Good dog grooming starts with coat-appropriate brushing, safe bathing, nail care, ear checks, and a calm routine your dog can learn to trust.

By Emily Foster/Family Planner

Start with the coat

Different coats need different tools. Short coats may need simple brushing, while double coats, curly coats, and long coats can mat if they are not maintained. Brush before bathing so tangles do not tighten in the water.

Bathing basics

Use dog-safe shampoo, keep water out of the ears, rinse thoroughly, and dry the coat well. Over-bathing can irritate skin, so build the schedule around your dog’s coat, activity level, and veterinarian guidance.

When to call a pro

Use a professional groomer for heavy matting, anxious dogs, complex coat trims, or nail care you are not comfortable handling. A good routine should reduce stress, not turn grooming into a wrestling match.
