Rock Climbing Gear: What You Need First

New climbers should start with shoes, chalk, a harness for roped climbing, and gym instruction before buying advanced outdoor gear.

By Ava Martinez/Adventure Guide

Beginner gym kit

For indoor climbing, start with climbing shoes and chalk. If you plan to rope climb regularly, add a comfortable harness and learn belay skills through the gym. Most gyms rent shoes, harnesses, belay devices, and chalk bags while you are learning.

Outdoor gear is different

Outdoor climbing can require ropes, helmets, quickdraws, anchor gear, crash pads, guidebooks, and route-specific knowledge. Do not assume indoor experience automatically transfers outside without instruction, partners, and safety systems.

Tahoe buying tip

Truckee and Tahoe climbers should buy slowly. Use rentals, take classes, and learn what type of climbing you actually enjoy before spending money on specialty gear for bouldering, sport climbing, trad climbing, or alpine routes.
