Rock Climbing Shoes: How to Choose the Right Pair

A beginner-friendly guide to rock climbing shoes, including fit, comfort, downturn, rubber, rentals, and what to buy before climbing in Truckee or Tahoe.

By Ava Martinez/Adventure Guide

Start with fit

Climbing shoes should feel snug and precise, but beginners do not need painful shoes. Your toes may be lightly curled, the heel should stay in place, and there should not be dead space around the foot. If you are just starting, comfort matters more than an aggressive shape.

Neutral, moderate, or aggressive

Neutral shoes are best for gym sessions, longer routes, and beginners. Moderate shoes add more performance for steeper climbing. Aggressive downturned shoes are built for overhangs and bouldering, but they can be uncomfortable for new climbers.

Before buying

Rent shoes at a climbing gym first if you can. Truckee and Tahoe climbers can compare fit at indoor gyms like High Altitude Fitness or Blue Granite before committing to a pair for local gym sessions or outdoor granite.
