What a harness does
A climbing harness connects the climber to the rope system. It is essential for top-rope climbing, lead climbing, rappelling, and many outdoor climbing situations. Bouldering usually does not use a harness because climbers stay low over pads.
Fit and features
The waist belt should sit above the hips and stay secure when weighted. Leg loops should be snug but not restrictive. Beginners can look for adjustable leg loops, clear tie-in points, and comfortable padding rather than ultralight specialty designs.
Safety check
Before climbing, check the waist buckle, leg loops, tie-in knot, belay device, carabiner, and partner communication. If you are unsure, ask gym staff for a harness check and take an intro belay class.
