Types of climbing walls
Bouldering walls are shorter and use padded flooring instead of ropes. Top-rope walls use a rope already anchored above the climber. Lead walls are for more experienced climbers who clip the rope while climbing. Auto belays let one person climb certain routes without a human belayer.
What beginners should choose
For a first visit, bouldering and auto belay routes are the simplest entry points. A staff belay lesson or intro class is worth it if you want to climb taller roped walls safely.
Tahoe wall options
High Altitude Fitness in Truckee and Incline Village and Blue Granite in South Lake Tahoe are the main indoor climbing-wall options around the basin. The Truckee Community Recreation Center also has a climbing wall for a more public recreation-center setting.
