What the Town is pursuing
On May 12, the Truckee Town Council directed staff to begin working with partners toward a Bee City USA affiliate designation. The program focuses on conserving native pollinators through native plants, nesting habitat, education, and reduced pesticide use.
Students at Tahoe Expeditionary Academy previously urged the Town to pursue the designation, and Tahoe Institute for Natural Science has offered to help lead the certification effort.
What Bee City means
Bee City USA affiliates make commitments through a local resolution and then work with community members to carry those commitments into programs, gardens, policies, and education.
For Truckee, the effort could connect schools, conservation groups, Town staff, gardeners, and residents around a visible pollinator strategy.
How residents can help
The Town's practical suggestions are simple: plant native plants, provide nesting habitat, reduce pesticide use, and learn more about the needs of native bees and other pollinators.
Pollinator Week runs June 22 through June 28 in 2026, making June a good time for residents to look at yards, community spaces, and local education opportunities.
