Why Truckee Opposes the U.S. Forest Service Reorganization Plan

The Town of Truckee says the proposed Forest Service reorganization could weaken regional expertise, wildfire readiness, and public land management.

What Truckee did

The Town of Truckee sent letters to U.S. Senators Adam Schiff and Alex Padilla and Congressman Kevin Kiley opposing a proposed U.S. Forest Service reorganization.

The Town says the proposal, outlined in Secretary's Memorandum 1078-015, includes closing regional offices and research centers and relocating the agency's headquarters.

Local concerns

Truckee's concern is practical and local: the Tahoe National Forest is closely tied to wildfire prevention, fuels reduction, watershed protection, recreation management, and forest health.

The Town argues that reducing regional presence could weaken place-based knowledge and make it harder for federal land managers to respond to Sierra Nevada conditions.

Why residents should watch it

Forest Service capacity affects more than agency structure. It can influence trail systems, wildfire risk, emergency response, public lands access, local recreation economies, and long-term forest resilience.

Residents who follow wildfire preparedness, defensible space, recreation access, and watershed issues should watch how federal representatives respond to the Town's request.
