Workshop overview
On May 15, 2026, Truckee Roundhouse hosted a free Spanish-only mending workshop for the local Spanish-speaking community. Sewing instructors helped participants use machines and repair clothing that might otherwise be thrown away.
The event was held in partnership with the Town of Truckee's Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility program and Keep Truckee Green.
Why language access matters
Textile reuse is easier to adopt when people can learn in a comfortable setting, ask questions in their language, and practice with tools in real time. A Spanish-only format removed a barrier that can keep residents from joining sustainability programs.
The workshop also turned a practical repair skill into a social space, with neighbors learning from instructors and from one another.
Sustainability takeaway
Repairing clothing reduces waste, saves money, and extends the life of useful items. For Truckee, the larger lesson is that climate and waste programs work better when they are designed for the whole community.
Residents interested in similar programs can watch Truckee Roundhouse, Keep Truckee Green, and the Town's IDEA updates for future workshops.
