Getting Around Truckee This Summer Without Relying on a Car

Summer in Truckee brings full trailheads, busy downtown blocks, tighter parking, and more pressure on local roads. If you live here, commute in, or visit on weekends, transportation choices can shape the whole day.

The Town's 2026 message is practical: use a car when it makes sense, but do not assume every short trip needs one. TART Connect, fare-free buses, BCycle, paved trails, and vanpools can reduce fuel costs, parking stress, and the number of mountain-town errands that turn into traffic loops.

TART Connect remains one of the most flexible choices because it is fare-free and on demand. The Town says the service has provided nearly 600,000 rides and averages roughly 500 to 600 passengers per day.

Fare-free TART buses serve Truckee and North Lake Tahoe routes, while the Transit app can help riders track buses in real time. BCycle e-bike share is back for the season, and the Town says riders have logged nearly 80,000 miles so far. For a dinner downtown, a trailhead hop, or a short cross-town errand, those options can be easier than circling for parking.

Truckee is also promoting vanpooling for commuters between Truckee and Washoe County, with potential savings that can reach about $1,000 per month per person depending on riders. The Town says two vanpools are already operating.

The Town maintains about 15 miles of paved trails and plans to resurface nearly three miles in 2026. That is good long-term news, but it also means trail users should watch for temporary closures before depending on a specific route.
